Tuesdays with Bert: Week 1

January 15, 2014

As I’m sure many of you can imagine, it can be very challenging to work full time, be a mom & wife, and to find time for creating art. I absolutely love to paint, but I find it hard to justify the time when there are so many things that need to get done. My husband is always very supportive of my art, and honestly, he’d probably be fine with me letting the house go to ruin while I paint. In that vein, he gave me the most wonderful gift this Christmas; a ticket to an evening acrylics class with an awesome Oklahoma artist, Bert Seabourn.

Last night was the first session, and I was SO nervous. :) It’s been years since I was in a school setting, but it was super chill and very much just like a workshop. He guided us through some basic drawing and composition, and then we started layering. I learned a lot of little things, even though painting faces isn’t something I do all that often… I’m looking forward to our weekly meetings and wondering what new things we’ll be learning each week.

My favorite thing I learned last night was to use my fingers more. Bert says Rembrandt painted with his fingers a lot and used his palm for blending. I haven’t used my fingers for painting since I was a girl, but it was actually pretty fun getting a little messy. Here’s my semi-finished project from last night.

I still need to finish this up, but I was so pleased with the end result.

I plan to document each of our class projects and share with you. If  you’re local, you should look into the classes they offer at Oklahoma Contemporary.

Thanks for reading,

~e
