25 Things

December 18, 2013

It’s Wednesday, and I thought I’d share a personal and random post inspired by the fabulous Garance Doré. Here are 25 random things you may or may not know about me.

1 – I can play the baritone ukulele. My father taught me to play when I was 8, and the first song I learned was, “Georgia On My Mind”, by Willie Nelson.

2 – I love the forest. When I am stressed and need to go to a “happy place”, I often imagine I’m surrounded by tall evergreen trees. I grew up in Oregon and would often disappear into the woods beside my house to escape doing chores or homework. When I smell cedar, it totally transports me to those happy moments from my childhood.

3 – I am a fisherman’s daughter. I grew up working in my family’s fish market. I can filet fish, crack crab, and bait tubs. As a result of this, I’m EXTREMELY picky about seafood. I won’t buy anything without smelling it first. My friends & family are embarrassed that I do this.

4 – I’m a little bit of a hypochondriac, but I almost NEVER go to the doctor. I hate hospitals and getting shots, though I do try to be brave about it, especially for my children.

5 – I was once a moderator on a John Mayer fan forum. Yes. All his sensitive singer-songwriter lyrics and guitar skills really gave my 21 year old life meaning. I made a lot friends in that group of JM fans that I still keep in touch with and I think fondly of my years obsessing about new singles, street teams, and tiny theater shows.

6 – I was in the Air Force for 8 years, and the last 3 of them I spent as a Sergeant. As a result I developed a bit of a bossy/critical streak that drives my husband crazy.

7 – I am a bit old fashioned. I like old music, movies, cars, vintage dresses, and furniture. In fact, when they finally get time travel working, I will most likely visit 1962 as my first order of business.

8 – I used to hate olives, but I worked really hard at teaching myself to like them, and now I LOVE them.

9 – I went through a girly phase after the birth of my first child and wore floral dresses, bright lipstick and all kinds of fou-fou things that I’ve never really been into. But, I got over it, and now I’m back to wearing basically black/grey/white/navy. I’m convinced it was a weird hormone thing that totally affected my personality. Don’t worry though, I’m fine now.

10 – I love rock climbing. I haven’t been in 5 years. That sounds stupid, but I had a bad experience at a climbing gym right after we moved to OKC and it just killed my desire to climb… Anyway, when I was 21 I climbed pretty regularly in Montana (while I was stationed there) with some coworkers, and I consider those times some of the happiest memories of my young adult life.

11 – I never had a real boyfriend in high school. I was a bit of a late bloomer and I never had the guts to approach the guy I really liked. I did go to dances though, often in outlandish vintage attire. Now that I think about it, my crazy outfits might have been part of the reason I was single?

12 – When I’m embarrassed, I blush a bright shade of red. In fact, my ears are often red any time I’m talking to someone. I think part of me is just constantly embarrassed at the idea of talking to people, even though I’m an extrovert. I think perhaps my mouth is extroverted, but my ears are introverted.

13 – I’m an excellent cook but a terrible baker. I like freedom to mix it up, and keep things flowing… baking feels too precise, and I often lose track of how many teaspoons I’ve added to something.

14 – I delivered my second child at home with a midwife. It was really hard, but exactly what I expected. She was fine, I was fine, and it all worked out.

15 – I plan to live in Europe one day. I anticipate it will be France, but it might be England, Ireland, perhaps Scandinavia. It might be after my children are grown, but my husband and I talk about it and I believe we’ll do it one day.

16 – I bloom where I’m planted, but not usually for very long. I’ve lived in Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Texas, Maryland, Montana, Colorado, and now Oklahoma. I have an itch to move, but I don’t know when it will happen. My husband is from Oklahoma and we are very invested in his family, so it’s tough to say what will happen.

17 – I am a painter. Though I don’t get to paint everyday, I am almost always thinking of my next painting. I often take photos of things with my phone that I save for color inspiration.

18 – I do NOT sweeten my coffee. Dessert is dessert, and Coffee is coffee. Let’s not confuse the two.

19 – My all-time top five records are as follows: Rhythm of Saints – Paul Simon, Greatest Hits (& Some That Will Be) – Willie Nelson (am I allowed to pick this? It’s probably cheating to pick a compilation.), Getz/Gilberto 1963 – Stan Getz, Baduism – Erykah Badu, and Every Breath You Take – The Police. I don’t know what this says about me, but whatever it says is probably true.

20 – I hate wearing jeans and I’m considering giving it up all together. I’ve NEVER found a pair that really worked for me, and I feel much more comfortable in dresses.

21 – I’m deeply envious of my children’s gorgeous red hair. I’m considering dying mine to match, even though I know it will never be as pretty.

22 – I love to be in the water, but I’m a terrible swimmer. I never took lessons, and I don’t even know how to keep afloat very well. I can doggy paddle a little, but I’m not at all graceful in the water. This is extra embarrassing because I grew up in a coastal town and I SHOULD be much better than I am.

23 – I adore good interior design. My very favorite spaces are a combination of modern, rustic, and bohemian. I’m not a terribly skilled interior stylist, but I know what I like and I know when something is just right for my space.

24 – My idea of a perfect day: Sleep in until 8, read & drink coffee, eat a leisurely farm breakfast on the patio while the kiddos play in the yard, take a long walk in the woods, swim (somewhat ungracefully) in the river, paint all afternoon, and eat a dinner outside with my family & friends, and drink wine while listening to live music. (Obviously my ideal day happens in Oregon somewhere.) :)

25 – I love being a designer. I’m very certain this is the career I was meant to have. I designed my first logo in high school and it’s been pretty much my life ever since. I feel like it has taken me a very long time to find my identity as a designer (and maybe even as a person) but I’m most proud of the work I’m doing right now.

Your turn! I’d love to know some random bits about you. :)

Love this post Erin! I giggled a lot and love knowing more about you. Have a great rest of the week!

Glad you had a laugh. Now you know more about my weirdness. :)

  • glynis

Except for the swimming thing, I wasn’t surprised. This is exactly how my heart sees you. Thanks for sharing!

    • pippinpearl

      xoxo Glynis!

  • Maddie Eisenhart

    I like your bossiness. :)

    • pippinpearl

I like you. We were definitely sisters in a past life or something.

  • Sarah Gray

    I enjoyed reading this.

    I take my coffee black.

    You are an awesome designer.

I lived in Prague for four years and Stockholm for one — Europe is my heart. I hope to someday live there again — some how, some way. Until then, I will travel about that continent with Lucia as much as possible. I feel like she is getting to the age where we can embark on some journeys.

    • pippinpearl

I’m so envious of your gypsy history! And yes to travel with the babes. I want to do more of that.

  • Lenabena

I just love you! I knew more than half of those, but still loved reading them. I’m SO glad you got over the John Mayer fan club. I completely understand your envy of your kids hair. They are GORGEOUS kids. I’m going to have to trust you a out he swimming thing- I just can’t imagine you being uncoordinated or not graceful doing anything! I also loved to find that besides Tim, we have quite a few things in common. :) Europe, cooking vs. baking, father was a fisherman (although not professionally- just everyday), hates jeans cuz they never fit me right and dresses are so much comfie, and I LOVE your perfect day. Sounds perfect to me, too. ;) love you bunches Erin!

    • pippinpearl

Love you too, Miss Lena Bena! I hope we get to spend a perfect day like that together one day soon. xoxo
